The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
