In a initial day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reinvent” America's largest city, ushering in “a new era” and an ambitious start to his term.

An Unprecedented Leader

The young democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

“A time such as this comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the people themselves whose hands are upon the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani added.

Ignoring advice to be modest, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will govern expansively and audaciously.”

Steering by Democratic Socialist Ideals

Mamdani openly embraced his core beliefs. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will govern as one. I will not abandon my ideals for fear of being called extreme,” he said to rapturous applause.

The inauguration was a two-part event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a former subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's ascent as a victory over the status quo.

A Costly Blueprint

Mamdani now faces one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a plan including:

• Subsidized daycare
• No-cost bus transit
• A cap on rents for nearly 1 million households
• A experiment of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion expense of these programs may pose a hurdle to finance. Mamdani has vowed to raise taxes on the richest residents and big business. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating Political Challenges

The new mayor also faces concern from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past stances regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past tweets.

Mamdani has moved to smooth over these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was described as unexpectedly friendly.

The Fundamental Challenges of Governing

Ultimately, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in delivering essential functions: trash collection, curbing the rodent problem, repairing roadways, and making sure smooth transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's public safety record, pointing to historically low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his remarks with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
